Connecticut is the fifth state in our Weekly Homeschool State Studies!
To start this week’s state study I added the state outline to our bulletin board, as well as the Capital and Postal Abbreviation along with a photo of the state flag, bird, flower and tree.
Capital: Hartford
Bird: American Robin
Flower: Mountain Laurel
Tree: Charter Oak
Postal Abbreviation: CT
We then watched this short video from Homeschool Pop:
Each child then completed this week’s outline. They paste a picture of the flag and add a photo from our themed dinner at the end of the week.
Unique State Food: For our Connecticut state dinner we made White Clam Pizza. According to our text, the White Clam Pizza was made famous at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven and is topped with fresh littleneck clams, olive oil, garlic, oregano, and grated Pecorino Romano Cheese. The kids were less than enthused to try this (we generally love seafood but not clams…) and while it was definitely not authentic I made it more kid friendly by making a cheesy white sauce, adding bacon and finely mincing the clams. All in all, pretty tasty! However, they were much happier with our Connecticut themed desserts – Milano cookies and Pez!
Lollipops were also invented in New Haven and the Subway sandwich chain began in Bridgeport so Connecticut has lots of fun, foodie options to explore!
As always we browsed through the two resources I mention more in depth in the state studies intro. My youngest loves coloring the placemats from America: State by State and we all are really loving the Awesome 50 States book!
Travel Bucket List: Definitely the Giant Pez Dispenser in Orange!
