Delaware: Homeschool State Study

February 11, 2022

Delaware is the first state in our Weekly Homeschool State Studies!

To start this week’s state study I added the state outline to our bulletin board, as well as the Capital and Postal Abbreviation along with a photo of the state flag, bird, flower and tree.

Capital: Dover
Bird: Blue Hen
Flower: Peach Blossom
Tree: American Holly
Postal Abbreviation: DE

We then watched this short video from Homeschool Pop:

Each child then completed this week’s outline. Delaware’s outline asks “Who was Stephanie Kwolek?” so we had fun watching a quick video about her and her amazing accomplishments!

For our Delaware state dinner we made scrapple, egg and cheese sandwiches. This is something we have often here in Maryland but it’s a big part of Delaware heritage too with their annual Apple-Scrapple Festival. For dessert we enjoyed a homemade peach pie (at one point Delaware was the leading producer of peaches!). Source: https://www.newsweek.com/50-dishes-50-states-look-each-states-official-food-1513526

While enjoying dessert we browsed through the two resources I mention more in depth in the state studies intro. My youngest loved coloring the placemat from America: State by State and we all are really loving the Awesome 50 States book! Even though we are so close to Delaware we were excited to read about some things we definitely want to check out, like the Steampunk Tree house in Milton and The Rockwood Mansion in Wilmington. They also mention a restaurant in Rehoboth that has a Sky-High Moon Pie! Yum!  Next up, Pennsylvania!
