New York is the eleventh state in our Weekly Homeschool State Studies and with the addition of this post I’m officially caught up and up to date with where we are actually at in our State Studies! Yay!
To start this week’s state study I added the state outline to our bulletin board, as well as the Capital and Postal Abbreviation along with a photo of the state flag, bird, flower and tree.
Capital: Albany
Bird: Bluebird
Flower: Rose
Tree: Sugar Maple
Postal Abbreviation: NY
We then watched this short video from Homeschool Pop:
Each child then completed this week’s outline including watching a short video about Grace Hopper.
Unique State Food: So many options to pick from! Pizza? Buffalo wings? Cheesecake or Ice Cream Sundaes? (There is lots of controversy over which state actually invented the Sundae… who knew!) We ended up going with the Unique State Food and Delicious Dessert featured in our Awesome 50 States Book… Coney Island Hot Dogs and New York Cheesecake. Definitely not the healthiest dinner (although I did make asparagus fries to go with!) Our Coney Island dogs weren’t authentic (I went with a chili with beans for the topping which I read is a no-no!) and really I’m not sure the difference between a chili dog and Coney Island dog… anyone? But nevertheless they were tasty, the kids approved and the mini New York Cheesecakes were delicious too. The kids drizzled them with their choice of chocolate or caramel sauce (or both).
As always we browsed through the two resources I mention more in depth in the state studies intro. My youngest loves coloring the placemats from America: State by State and we all are really loving the Awesome 50 States book!
Travel Bucket List: Mount Tremper boasts the World’s Largest Kaleidoscope made from an old silo. Apparently you can lie on the ground and watch the kaleidoscope turn above you. We all agreed that would be pretty cool to see!
