Massachusetts is the sixth state in our Weekly Homeschool State Studies!
To start this week’s state study I added the state outline to our bulletin board, as well as the Capital and Postal Abbreviation along with a photo of the state flag, bird, flower and tree.
Capital: Boston
Bird: Black-capped chickadee
Flower: Mountain Laurel
Tree: Charter Oak
Postal Abbreviation: MA
We then watched this short video from Homeschool Pop:
Each child then completed this week’s outline including researching and discussing the significance of Plymouth Rock.
Unique State Food: According to the Awesome 50 States book the Unique State Food is New England Clam Chowder. After last week’s White Clam Pizza for our Connecticut State Study the kiddos however were not keen on even trying it. Instead we did some Boston Baked Beans with dinner and they were definitely happy about the dessert… Boston Cream Pie! Unfortunately I had no time this particular weekend to make one. As it turns out this worked out just fine as Dunkin Donuts originated in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950! So we picked up some DD Boston Cream Donuts… heart shaped because Valentine’s Day!
As always we browsed through the two resources I mention more in depth in the state studies intro. My youngest loves coloring the placemats from America: State by State and we all are really loving the Awesome 50 States book!
Travel Bucket List: We all agreed Plymouth Rock would be amazing to visit in person. The Paper House in Rockport also sounds weird and intriguing!
